Getty Images Steve Stricker has an MRI scheduled for Tuesday, which he hopes will show the extent of the injury and what he needs to do to get better. PRINTEMAILTEXT by Doug Ferguson Associated Press Series: PGA Tour ATLANTA -- Tiger Woods might need a new partner for the Presidents Cup.
Steve Stricker, who went 4-0 with Woods as a partner two years ago, said Friday his left arm feels so weak he can't guarantee being fit enough to play the Presidents Cup on Nov. 17-20 in Australia.
TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
At 48, Vijay Singh is the oldest player in the Tour Championship. At 23, Jason Day is the youngest.
Golf on TVWith Woods already picked, Couples in pickle with final Presidents Cup spotShort-hitting Donald shows there's another way to top of world rankingStricker gets cortisone shot, but still concerned over weakness in left armToms receives Payne Stewart Award for his work with children's charitiesVerplank out for five months after having left wrist rebuiltWednesday notebookMany players focus on winning Tour Championship trophy, not FedExCupThursday recapFriday recapStricker might opt to skip Presidents Cup, have surgery on left arm soonSaturday recap REVIEW EAST LAKEEast Lake Golf Club is the venue for this week's Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Have you played it? If so, click on its name to write a review of your experience. Also, be sure to check out our PGA.com Course Guide to review all the courses you've played and to find the perfect course for your next round.
"There's no question I want to be there," Stricker said after scrambling to an even-par 70 at the Tour Championship. "I just want to get better. That's the frustrating thing. And I've got to look out for next year. I just feel beat up."
Stricker has a herniated disk and a bone spur that he first detected a year ago December. His condition improved through exercise, and he went on to win twice this year on the PGA Tour. But the 44-year-old says his left arm has become progressively weaker, and he withdrew from the BMW Championship last week to get a cortisone shot.
He has an MRI scheduled for Tuesday, which he hopes will show the extent of the injury and what he needs to do to get better.
"I'm this close to saying, `Let's do surgery' so I can feel good," he said. "I think this has been going on for a while."
Stricker is the highest-ranked American golfer at No. 5 in the world, and he finished second in qualifying for the Presidents Cup. If he cannot play, U.S. captain Fred Couples would have a free pick.
Couples already has pledged one of his two picks on Woods, and he was likely not to break up a partnership that delivered the first 4-0 mark ever in the Presidents Cup and the first such record in any cup competition in nearly 30 years.
Stricker and Woods were so strong two years ago that Geoff Ogilvy said of the partnership, "One guy hits every fairway and makes every putt. And his partner is Tiger Woods."
Stricker said he is at least optimistic since he has no pain. He just doesn't know why he has so little strength on his left side. It has kept him from a firm grip on the club, from getting through the ball and even keeping both hands on the club.
He still managed to open with a 68-70 at East Lake, leaving him six shots out of the lead. But he is no less concerned.
"One little flinch and I can't hang onto it," he said. "That's the part that's frustrating. It's felt rotten every morning. I start hitting balls on the range, and I feel I have no energy, no power on that left side. I struggled early today, and I got a little better. It's just that I felt tired all the way around. I don't have energy to hit shots with an all-out effort."
Stricker said doctors last December, when he first discovered the problem, said he could treat the injury without surgery and it worked. But he stopped working out as much when summer arrived and he played more often, and he wonders if that's what led to the deteriorating strength.
"I'm hoping that it's not a big deal, that maybe ... I don't know," he said. "I don't know that much about it. I'd love to go hit balls right now, but I feel that would be counterproductive. That's the frustrating part. I don't know how this is going to get better."
He said if he was not at full strength in November, "I don't think it's fair to the team."

Adam Scott has to win the Tour Championship and hope that players ranked higher in the points standings finish poorly if he is to land the FedExCup and its $10million bonus Adam Scott held a one-shot lead at the midway point of the Tour Championship in Atlanta after a superb recovery in his second round.
KJ Choi is second, with Jason Day and Luke Donald a further stroke behind.
It was, though, an awful day for the top three in the FedEx Cup standings with Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose all failing to make level par.
It means there is a possibility someone else can sneak in and claim the $10million bonus decided on an accumulated points system at FedEx Cup events.
Scott started the day in a five-way tie for fifth and he overcame a poor start, where he suffered three bogeys in the first six holes, to finish with eight birdies - including five in six holes - for a five-under-par 65.
Choi also finished with a five-under-par 65 with six birdies and one bogey.
Day matched his 67 of yesterday with five birdies and two bogeys to move to six under overall, while Donald putted two bogeys and four birdies for a two-under-par 68.
There was a four-way tie for fifth. Bubba Watson had started the day in 22nd but shot up the leaderboard with a six-under-par 64, including seven birdies and one bogey to finish at five under overall.
Three birdies on the final five holes helped lift Bill Haas alongside Watson after he improved on yesterday's 68 with a five-under-par 67 after three bogeys appeared to have scuppered him.
Hunter Mahan joined them following a two-under-par 68 in what is a consistent performance from the American.
Overnight leader Keegan made up the quartet following three bogeys and two birdies in his one-over-par 71.
Simpson led the FedEx Cup coming into the tournament but he produced five bogeys in the first 10 holes although a birdie and an eagle in consecutive holes on the back nine helped him to a level-par 70.
Johnson, second in the standings, also had an awful round with two double bogeys for a three-over-par 73.
BMW Championship winner Rose's round included two double bogeys, four bogeys and three birdies for a five-over-par 75.
Leona Maguire - Won three out of three points for Europe The USA retained the Junior Solheim Cup in dramatic circumstances when they came from behind to earn a 12-12 draw against Europe at Knightsbrook Hotel Spa & Golf Resort, Co. Meath, Ireland.
The visiting team trailed 7-5 after the first day's foursomes and fourballs but won the singles by the same margin and retained the trophy on account of the fact they were holders having won the 2009 match in Illinois.
The result means that the Americans now lead the Europeans by 3 ? matches to 2 ? in a series which was inaugurated at Oak Ridge CC, Minnesota, back in 2002.
The final day started under leaden skies but there was nothing dull about the golf being produced by both sides.
America's Jaye Marie Green produced the first point of the day when she defeated Sweden's Emma Nilsson by 3&2 in the opening match.
However, that was quickly countered when Ireland's Leona Maguire made it three points out of three for the tournament with a commanding 5&4 victory over Mariah Stackhouse.
At that stage, there was little to separate the two sides and the situation was still the same when England's Lauren Taylor lost to Gabriella Then when she three-putted the final green.
Welsh girl Amy Boulden then claimed Europe's second point of the day with a 4&2 victory over Emma Talley.
The weather took a turn for the worse around midday and, as heavy rain started to fall, the visiting Americans began to take a grip of the proceedings.
Lisa Maguire lost 3&2 against Alison Lee and, while Antonia Scherer brought some respite to the home side with a 4&2 win over McKenzie Talbert, the American's strength down the stretch began to tell.
Five of the day's 12 singles matches went to the 18th hole and the US won three and halved two of them.
One of the most valuable contributions came from Ashlan Ramsey who came to the 153-yard par-three final hole one down to French girl, Manon Gidali, but then hit her tee shot to 12 inches and holed the putt for a winning birdie two.
That will go down as the unofficial Shot of the Match and her half point seemed to spur the visitors into redoubling their efforts.
Summar Roachell defeated Spain's Luna Sobron on the last.
British Girls' champion, Margaux Vanmol from Belgium, finished a fine tournament with a 3&2 victory over Kyung Kim but almost immediately Esther Lee also won her match on the 18th when French girl, Emilie Alonso, took three to get down from a devilish spot behind the green.
As the drama intensified Alonso's compatriot, Celine Boutier, could only halve with Karen Chung and moments later Lindsay Weaver sealed America's all-important 12th point with a 2&1 win over England's Charley Hull.
Justin Rose is four shot ahead A huge collapse from Mark Wilson saw Justin Rose move four shots clear going into the final round at the BMW Championship in Illinois.
The pair began the day level on 11 under par after two rounds, but where Rose carded a two-under 69 to edge further clear, Wilson suffered a nightmare six-over 77 to plummet into a share of seventh-place.
While Rose was unspectacular, he did not need to be.
"I was aware today that it was a pretty tricky day and guys weren't going low," Rose said. "I'm pretty happy to get it in where I was."
Rose is aware that he has thrown away such a lead before on the final day.
"I've been there a little bit last year - won one, lost one when I was in a situation like this," he said.
"So I've got some good experience on which to count on. Just keep seeing good shots and keep playing one shot at a time. I don't think you can get defensive. A four-shot lead isn't really a big enough lead to waste holes."
Rose's round was largely uneventful as back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth quickly boosted his advantage and he quickly cancelled out a bogey on the 12th with a birdie on the 13th.
His scorecard was otherwise unblemished, with the solid effort leaving him comfortably ahead of second-placed John Senden, who signed for a 70, using four birdies on the back nine to recover from a shocking start that saw him bogey three of the opening five holes.
Wilson, however, had no such joy. He was struggling after bogeys on the third and seventh saw him make the turn at two over, and although he birdied the 11th it was not a sign of better things to come.
Instead, he bogeyed the 12th and 13th before a double-bogey on the 15th and another bogey on the 16th completed a miserable day.
It might have been even worse as Wilson risked a two-stroke penalty on the 14th hole when his club grazed the sand when he replaced his ball, having marked it to allow Rose to play.
He reported it to rules official Brad Fabel but had to wait until the end of his round to get the good news.
"I didn't realise it until I lifted myself up and I saw a mark," Wilson said. "I'm like, 'Oh no. that's my club that made that mark'. So I asked the guys and they deliberated about it and they talked to the USGA about it and they feel good about the decision.
"I couldn't lobby for it at all, I just had to sit there and wait. I'm glad it went in my favour."
Wilson denied the incident - and the uncertainty - were behind his double bogey on the next hole.
"Nah. I'm a big boy." Wilson said. "I got fooled on the wind at 15 is really all that happened there and I pressed on 16. I just couldn't get any putts to drop."
Geoff Ogilvy is up to third after an impressive three-under 68 saw him improve to eight-under for the tournament, level with Bill Haas, who suffered a double-bogey on the 16th to drop out of a share for second, having used an eagle on the 11th to climb up the standings.
Webb Simpson began the day in second place, but his disappointing round of 73 dropped him to fifth on seven under, one shot ahead of Keegan Bradley.
The best rounds of the day belonged to Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald, who each went round in 67, four under par, to climb all the way up to a share of seventh, having been 20th.
Garcia had an up and down day, but an eagle on the par-five 15th helped him overcome three bogeys on his scorecard. Donald also had two bogeys, but six birdies helped him make up ground on the leaders.
Donald is recovering from an opening day 75 with rounds of 66 and 67 the last two times out.
"I drove it better, high irons better, I putted better, my short game was better," Donald said when asked what had changed.
"None of it really worked very well the first day for some reason. I just got off to a horrible start. I'm proud of myself to get back in it and at least give myself a sniff."
Getty Images Europe assistant captain Annika Sorenstam (left), with Catriona Matthew at Killeen Castle, would like to see the Solheim Cup format remain as is. PRINTEMAILTEXT by Brian Keough Associated Press Series: LPGA Tour COUNTY MEATH, Ireland -- Europe needs a win in the Solheim Cup to prevent talk from escalating about changing the format of a competition that has become increasingly one-sided, Annika Sorenstam said Wednesday.
The United States leads the series 8-3 and will be seeking its fourth successive victory when the competition starts Friday at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Killeen Castle course, 25 miles northwest of Dublin.
SOLHEIM CUP
The Solheim Cup is being played in Ireland for the first time, after previous European editions had been staged in Scotland, Wales and Sweden.
Golf on TVUnderdog Europeans can win, says rookie ReidEurope needs win to keep Solheim Cup relevant, says SorenstamEuropean Captain Nicholas ready for worst of weatherUnited States favored to win for fourth straight timeFriday recapSaturday recap“It would mean a lot,” Sorenstam said of her hopes for a first European triumph since 2003. “Otherwise you’d go 10 years without winning, then people start thinking about should we change the format and everything.”
With the emergence of so many strong players from Asia, Australia and Latin America, some have suggested that the United States should play an international team that includes players from outside Europe instead of the current format. But Sorenstam, the Swedish former great who is a non-playing assistant to Europe captain Alison Nicholas this year, said she wants to see tradition maintained.
“I just want to continue and have the Solheim Cup for 30 or 40 years,” she said. “We have a great competition, let’s keep it.”
Players from both sides said previous contests have been tight despite the American dominance.
“I’ve played six, and we won once of my six,” said No. 2-ranked Suzann Pettersen of Norway. “But I must say every year it feels like it’s so close. It really comes down to Sunday’s singles matches. Even though the final numbers might look like it was a walk in the park for the Americans, it usually comes down to certain matches and once the final putt has dropped, the points keep counting.”
Juli Inkster, who makes her ninth appearance, also said the event is still competitive.
“I think we need to leave it the way it is,” she said. “You look at the past three Solheim Cups, it was close. It was close until the last day. We were behind a couple of those times. I don’t think we need to change it at all.”
Inkster, who will become the oldest player in the event’s history at 51, predicted a close match despite two successive four-point winning margins for the U.S. side.
“I think this is the deepest European team there has ever been. I think the rookies that they have on their team are playing very well,” Inkster said. “I don’t know how you guys keep thinking we’re favorites. We’re going out there and playing like we’re underdogs.”
The teams will play foursomes and fourballs on Friday and Saturday, before moving to singles matches on Sunday.

PRINTEMAILTEXT by Associated Press Series: PGA Tour ATLANTA -- David Toms was presented the Payne Stewart Award on Tuesday, in honor of the three-time major champion who died in a plane crash on his way to the Tour Championship in 1999.
The award is for a player who shares Stewart’s respect for golf tradition, commitment to charity and presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.

He also has raised more than $2 million through a charity golf tournament that raises money for children who have been abused or neglected.
“Something like this is different,” Toms said. “It’s different than winning a tournament. It goes beyond that. And to be a part of this award is truly special.”
Toms said his only regret was not getting to play on a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team with Stewart, although he saw how much Stewart enjoyed life during the King Hassan tournament in Morocco. Toms said Stewart was in the locker room, wearing a strange hat and dancing to music in the presence of royalty.
“He went on to win the tournament that week, and it made an impression on me what he was all about,” Toms said. “I wish I would have got to play with him a lot longer. But just to be associated with the award with his name is a great honor.”

A view of the final hole at Killeen Castle The Ladies Irish Open will be staged once again at Killeen Castle in 2012, marking its third successive year at the venue.
Over the past few years the field at the Ladies Irish Open has grown from strength to strength, cementing its place on the Ladies European Tour and showcasing some of the world's top players.
A host of Solheim Cup Stars competing this week have become regular Irish Open participants and favourites with the Irish crowd including America's Christina Kim and England's Laura Davies.
The past two champions Sweden's Sophie Gustafson (2010) and world number two Suzann Pettersen from Norway, who shot a course record 63 this year, will be leading the charge for Europe this week as they attempt to grasp The Solheim Cup from the Americans.
ATZENBRUGG, Austria -- Kenneth Ferrie beat fellow Englishman Simon Wakefield in a playoff to win the Austrian Open on Sunday for his first European Tour title since 2005 and third overall.
Ferrie and Wakefield both carded a 67 to finish 12-under 276 for the tournament. In the playoff, Wakefield’s approach to the green landed in the rough. Ferrie holed a 7-foot birdie to wrap up the victory.
The Austrian Open is being played for the second straight year at Diamond Country Club near Vienna, after spending four years at Fontana Golf Club.
“I feel amazing right now. I haven’t won for six years and I was wondering if it was ever going to happen in the end,” Ferrie said.
Ferrie, 32, won the Spanish Open in 2003 and the European Open two years later but only just managed to keep his card last season.
“It means the world to me. I have been working very hard … but I just haven’t had the results to back it up,” Ferrie said. “So to win here, under the pressure of a playoff, is amazing and it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
Wakefield, chasing his first title on the tour, looked out of contention after bogeying the par-4 17th.
However, last year’s Qualifying School champion got the birdie he needed on the last hole to level with Ferrie, who missed a putt on the 18th which would have won him the title in regular play.
“If you shoot 5 under on the final day playing in the final group, then it is difficult to take,” Wakefield said. “But I am happy with the way the week has gone.”
Joost Luiten of the Netherlands led the leaderboard for most of the final round. He hit five birdies before bogeying the last hole and finishing third, one stroke off the lead.
“A bogey on the 18th is not what you hope for. I am disappointed,” said Luiten, who is yet to win a European Tour event. “But it’s been a good week for me.”
Thomas Norret of Denmark, who had a two-stroke overnight lead, carded a double bogey on the par-5 13th and finished fourth for his best career result.
Tom Lewis of England rounded off an impressive professional debut by carding a 68 for his best round of the tournament. The 20-year-old Walker Cup player improved to 6 under to share 10th place and finish above illustrious names such as Miguel Angel Jimenez (5 under) and Oliver Wilson (3 under).
Ferrie sealed the win on the 18th hole, being afforded two putts to do so despite his initial drive going wide of the fairway while Wakefield's landed on it. Wakefield overhit his second shot into rough at the back of the green, though, and, after Ferrie had recovered with a beautiful second to within seven feet of the pin, the rest was a formality.
It had so nearly been a three-way playoff, with Luiten dropping a shot on the par-4 18th to fall out of contention on 11 under.
Both Ferrie and Wakefield ended on 12 under, with Wakefield birdieing the last to deny Ferrie the win in regulation time after the latter had missed a putt to win it on the penultimate hole.
Wakefield was disappointed to have gone so close to breaking through, but was also eager to take positives from his performance. He is now well within the top 115 and in with a great chance of keeping his Tour card, having started the tournament in 145th.
Getty Images Sophie Gustafson (left) and Suzann Pettersen celebrated Europe's victory after both won their singles matches on Sunday. PRINTEMAILTEXT by Brian Keogh Associated Press Series: LPGA Tour COUNTY MEATH, Ireland -- Europe won the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2003 on Sunday, finishing powerfully to beat the United States 15-13 at Killeen Castle.
Caroline Hedwall of the Netherlands earned a crucial halved match with Ryann O'Toole -- after being 2 down with two holes left -- to give Europe a 14-13 lead.
Spain's Azahara Munoz birdied the 17th in the final singles to go 1 up on Angela Stanford and guarantee Europe's victory before closing out a one-hole victory at the last.
Earlier Michelle Wie lost two late holes to fall to Europe's Suzann Pettersen.
Play was suspended three times during the day due to adverse weather conditions.
The sides were tied 8-8 entering Sunday's 12 singles matches. Europe won the session 7-5 with American Cristie Kerr forced to forfeit her match with Karen Stupples.
Kerr, who was set to play in the 12th singles match, was unable to start due to a wrist injury.
